Ian McDiarmid
Ian McDiarmid studied at the Royal Academy, Glasgow, and won the prestigious Gold Medal. His many leading stage roles include The Black Prince, Volpone, The Jew of Malta and Prospero in ‘The Tempest’. In 2005, he played the title roles in Edward Bond’s ‘Lear’ and Tom Stoppard’s new version of Pirandello’s ‘Henry IV’. As joint Artistic Director of London’s Almeida Theatre with Jonathan Kent he was awarded the coveted Evening Standard Award for Outstanding Contribution to Theatre. On Broadway in 2006, he won a Tony Award for his performance as Teddy in Brian Friel’s ‘Faith Healer’. McDiarmid has acted in 47 films since 1976, whilst his chilling Emperor Palpatine in George Lucas’s ‘Star Wars’ series has brought him worldwide recognition.
