Herbert Read

1893-1968

Sir Herbert Edward Read was an English anarchist, poet and literary critic. He is best known for his books on art, which included volumes on the role of art within education. Read was co-founder of the Institute of Contemporary Arts and was one of the earliest English writers to tackle existentialism. Read wrote two volumes of poetry based on his experiences as a soldier in WWI, most of his poetry is free verse, with influence from the Metaphysical Poets and Imagism.
