W.H. Auden
1907-1973
Wystan Hugh Auden was born in York in 1907. A poet, playwright, librettist and critic, his 1930 collection, Poems brought him instant fame. Awarded the Gold Medal for Poetry in 1937 and the Pulitzer Prize in 1948, he was Professor of Poetry at Oxford University from 1956 to 1961.
