Robert Lowell

1917-1977

Robert Traill Spence Lowell was born into American aristocracy in Boston in 1917. His first collection, Lord Weary’s Castle, published in 1946, brought him iconic status and won the Pulitzer Prize. His seminal work Life Studies was hugely influential and was followed in 1973 by The Dolphin, for which he was awarded his second Pulitzer Prize.
