Poet
Percy Bysshe Shelley
1792-1822
Percy Bysshe Shelley was born into an aristocratic family in Sussex in 1792. Poet, playwright and courageous pamphleteer, his long poem Queen Mab, published in 1813 when he was twenty, was regarded as one of the most revolutionary poems in the language. The Revolt of Islam (1818), The Mask of Anarchy (1819), Prometheus Unbound (1820), his haunting odes and his final work The Triumph of Life (published posthumously in 1824) testify to his intellectual and lyric genius. He drowned in the Bay of Lerici in 1822.
