William Blake

1757-1827

William Blake was a poet, painter and printmaker from London. Although he was largely unrecognised during his lifetime, he is now considered a seminal figure of both the Romantic Poets and within visual arts of the Romantic Age. His most famous poetic works are ‘Songs of Innocence and ‘Songs of Experience’, which you can read on our site. In 2002, BBC placed Blake at number 38 in their poll of the 100 Greatest Britons. Blake was actually considered mad by his contemporaries – his idiosyncratic views, creativity and diverseness was only celebrated by later critics. Although Blake was hostile towards the Church of England, the Bible was a large influence in his work. William Rossetti described Blake as a “glorious luminary”.
