Poet

John Keats

1795-1821

John Keats, along with fellow Romantic poets, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and George Gordon, Lord Byron, remains one of the most loved of English poets. Keats, an East Londoner, was a medical student when he wrote
‘Imitation of Spenser’ (1814). He first appeared in print a year later with ‘O Solitude’. Keats’ first volume, ‘Poems’, was published in 1816. During time spent at Wentworth House he wrote five of his six famous Odes, and ‘Annus Mirabilis’. Keats died of tuberculosis in Rome at the age of 25, on the 23rd of February, 1821, upset that he had not left a significant legacy. How wrong he was!
