Lord Byron

1788-1824

George Gordon Byron, Lord Byron (he inherited the title at the age of ten) was born in London in 1788. A poet, playwright, essayist and campaigner for Liberal causes, he exerted a profound influence on Romanticism. His collection Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, the first cantos of which were published in 1812, brought him worldwide fame. His satirical and controversial masterpiece Don Juan was published in 1819. He died of fever at Messolonghi in 1824 during his campaign for Greek independence.
